Arts-Integrated Learning, TK Through 5th Grade

Page Academy is a private TK-8th arts-integrated school, which means the arts aren't an enrichment period tacked onto the end of the day but the way the academics are taught. Elementary students learn reading, writing, math, science, and social studies through direct, rigorous instruction, and then they put that learning to work by building, writing, designing, and performing what they've studied.

A unit on plant life turns into a class-built terrarium, a unit on weather turns into student-made instruments, and a fifth-grade California history unit ends with students performing original monologues in the voices of the figures they researched. When children have to make something from what they've learned, they can't fake the understanding, and that's what makes the learning stick.

ARTS-INTEGRATED ACADEMICS

Core subjects are taught directly, with mastery checks built in, and then applied through artistic practice. Students sketch a science concept while they're learning it, write in the voice of a character to understand a story, and build models alongside the math, so every subject gets understood more than one way.

THE CREATORS PROGRAM

Alongside the academics, every elementary student rotates through the Creators Program's four creative domains each year: performing arts, visual arts and design, production and tech, and the business of creative work. Students build broad creative range first and begin choosing an emphasis area in upper elementary.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

To best prepare our students for the 21st century, Page utilizes the latest in cutting-edge instructional technology; including interactive SMARTBoards in every classroom, a 1:1 tablet ratio for students, and opportunities to use 3D printers, design software and other tools that help develop skills for the future.

EXPLORE OUR WORLD

Our signature interdisciplinary project gives every grade its own theme, with younger students exploring communities and local connections and older students investigating cultures and traditions around the world. The themes run through the reading, writing, and research all year, and students present what they've learned to a live audience.

INVENTION CONVENTION

Each year, elementary students identify a real problem, sketch a solution, build and test a prototype, and present the finished invention to families and faculty. It turns the traditional science fair into a showcase for design thinking, engineering, and public speaking.
